For years now, I’ve struggled to find a good sugar cookie recipe for cutout cookies that both tasted great and held its shape in the oven. One of the biggest issues I had was that the recipes that I found that made for cookies that held their shape required cream of tartar. While everyone says that cream of tartar doesn’t have a taste, my husband and I both can definitely tell when its been added and don’t enjoy the flavor. What’s the point of having a cute cookie if it has a funky after taste? No thanks. So finally, I present to you my favorite, husband approved, cream of tartar free recipe for cutout sugar cookie!
Prep time – 20 minutes (not including refrigeration time)
Cook time – 6-8 minutes
1 3/4 sticks of butter – room temp
2 eggs – room temp
2 cups of white sugar
2 1/2 cups of flour
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1 teaspoon of flavoring
Pinch of salt
Cream together eggs and butter in a large bowl until smooth. Beat in eggs and stir in flour, baking powder, flavoring and salt. Mix until thoroughly combined. Dough should be a similar texture to play dough. Place ball of dough in cling wrap and refrigerate for at a minimum of one hour or up to overnight. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Remove the cling wrap and place chilled dough on a floured surface. Flour your cookie cutters and rolling pin as well. Roll dough out into about 1/4-1/2 inch thick. Cut dough with flour cookie cutters and place onto a lined cookie sheet. Place prepped cookies on the cookie sheet into the refrigerator while the oven finishes pre heating.Bake for 6-8 minutes depending on the thickness and size of your cookies Let your cookies completely cool before decorating or freezing.
You can freeze the cookies in layers on parchment paper in an airtight container. When you’re ready to use them, allow the cookies to come back to room temperature after freezing before decorating. I’ll be using this batch as a fun valentines day treat!
